Stonehouse Bridge, barely recognisable after being bombed. (Derek Tait)

In the space of less than three hours that first evening, some 125 enemy aircraft brought terror to the city, and by around midnight the centre of Plymouth was aflame. When the other fire brigades arrived, their sole navigational aid being the bright orange glow in the night sky which indicated where Plymouth was, they found they could only be of limited help with putting out fires because their equipment was not compatible with fire-fighting devices already being used in the city, and had to rely on what hoses they could connect up to the ordinary water mains. As one of them remarked, it was ‘like trying to put out a blazing warehouse with a stirrup-pump,’ and many fires had to be left to burn themselves out. They were eventually declared under control at about 4.30 a.m., by which time nearly 800 firemen were on duty.
